[ But the portal does indeed open in what Stephen remembers to be the living room. He steps through it and looks around before closing it. ]

[He'd find the older man on his knees near a still-broken section of flooring, busily planting an oak sapling in the dirt under the wood flooring. There were other saplings waiting to be planted lined against a wall, several others already planted.

Brushing his hands off on his knees, he glanced up at the other with a wry smirk.]

Of course I do. He's currently snooping around upstairs.

[If the younger sorcerer listened, he'd likely hear the pitter-patter of paws from the next floor up.]

[ As if on cue, Stephen hears a thump to go along with the pitter-patter. He guesses it must be playing. He looks up and then back to the other Stephen and what he was doing. ]

You sure you don't want to, you know, move the garden outside?

Nope. Liked this as a forest. Gives me a chance to redo the terrain as it grows. Maybe adjust the way the river runs.

[As if the living room looks big enough to one day have a river through it, especially with the amount of trees Stephen was looking to plant, and just how big they were all likely to get.

That was a redwood or two in the mix after all.]

Might cut down on the territory disputes if it cuts through the forest a bit more evenly this time.

[ Stephen stares down at his other self for a moment before looking back around them. ]

You plan on staying here several years and watching it all grow? Or do you plan to manipulate it all like some holodeck?

That's where magic comes in.

And as the place absorbs energy it'll start growing all on it's own.

[Wong clearly hears the pair downstairs because there's a skitter of doggy feet down the stairs and soon enough the Lillipup is doing excited circles around the younger of the pair's feet, tail wagging a mile a minute.]

[ His brow creases more at the explanation, ]

[ Was he really that out of the loop here? He doesn't have long to worry about it, though, with the nicer Wong coming into the room and Stephen can't help smiling at the excitement. He tries to get a look at him as he's circled but Stephen ends up just kneeling down and holding out a hand. ]

[Being busted back to square one after so long was bullshit though. He paused when he spied the excited pup, lips tugging to a faint grin instead of a frown.

Wong? Was all too happy to greet the younger sorcerer, sniffing at his hand before he gave the fingers a careful lick and planted himself firmly under Stephen's palm for pets.]

Looks like someone's happy to see you.

Good to know that's another constant with them. He smiles a little easier once Wong accepts him (how true that is of the other Wong, too) and the pokedog gets pets from both hands. On his head and behind his ears while the other rubs his back. ]

He'll change his mind once he gets to know me.

[ A pause. ]

How do you start from scratch from all that?

Well, the reason my magic got fucked was because the worlds magic was fucked. Long story short, other-dimensional Space Inquisition has a way to literally kill magic. Started small- artifacts and locations of power, then moved onto the bigger stuff like the leylines and the mystics. The Sanctum.

I've still got the proverbial muscle memory of working with that. And there's plenty of magic here for me to work with. Spent at least fifty or so years learning the old rules, gives me a leg up on figuring out how new ones might work.

[He shrugged lightly, going back to filling in dirt around the sapling as he spoke, mostly because it gave him something to focus on.]
